Blizzconline 2021: Highlights from the Free, Virtual Event

Avyn Lundgren, Staff writer

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Blizzard Entertainment, the company behind the Warcraft series and other popular video games.

Even though COVID-19 is still a big issue, the Blizzard team has worked hard to make Blizzcon happen this year. It was canceled last year.

The event took place on February 19 and 20 starting with an opening ceremony. This year some interviews were conducted at various different places because Blizzard did not get access to the Anaheim Convention Center where they usually host Blizzcon.

Instead, we got a special rendition of Blizzcon that is completely online as well as free to anyone that wants to watch it.

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft, as well as World of Warcraft: Classic, are both getting additions later this year. World of Warcraft will be getting an update to the most recent expansion, Shadowlands. The expansion includes a new area for players to explore as well as a 10-boss raid and a new mega dungeon.

World of Warcraft: Classic is getting its first expansion that was originally released in 2007.

Diablo

Diablo II is getting a remaster that supports cross-progression, which allows for players to access their characters from any console/system the player has.

Blizzard also released some information on their upcoming game Diablo IV, the information being that the rogue only seen in the original Diablo will be returning.

Overwatch

Lastly, Blizzard revealed new looks for four other characters on top of the several new looks for characters shown at Blizzcon 2019 for Overwatch 2. Blizzard stated they want the sequel to be the “next big step in the Overwatch universe.” One of the ways they want to achieve that is by adding a story mode as well as hero mission. This entails four players being dropped into a specific location and working together to achieve specific goals.

Those are the highlights and announcements from this year’s Blizzcon, and all we can do is wait to see what else they may have in store for this year and the foreseeable future.
