Book Review: “We Were Liars”
February 17, 2021
We Were Liars is by E. Lockhart and shows the life of a wealthy family called the Sinclairs who strive for perfection.
You figure this out quickly while the story is being told firsthand from Cadence Sinclair. She is the eldest grandchild and is the heiress to the island, the same one the family stays at every summer. Cadence, or Cady, is part of a close group in the family called “The Liars.” This group includes her, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat.
All of the summers are normal until Cady can’t remember why she was found floating in the water away from the island, the rest of The Liars nowhere to be found. She spends years away from the island that is causing her so much stress until one summer she returns to get the answers she’s been desperately wanting, all while suffering brain-splitting post-traumatic headaches.
I enjoyed the plot twists in the book and the way you realize what is happening at the moment with Cady and remember her predicament along with her as she pieces everything back together. The cliché saying is a good book keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the author of this book really kept her word in that case.
We Were Liars keeps you waiting for the next explanation and clue. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a dramatic or suspenseful mystery.
