South High’s Restaurant ‘What’s Bruin?’ Back in Action

Emma Marx and Hieu Le

What’s Bruin? is a food and drink shop located in South High. It’s an extension of the restaurant skills class. We asked its teacher, Mrs. Denault, about the history of the class and how Covid-19 has affected it.

“In 2019, we had a naming contest and renamed the restaurant What’s Bruin?,” Denault said. “The old name was The Bruin Lunchbox and that was the only other name it ever had.”

A substantial change occurred to the restaurant class when Davies split from South.

“We lost half the student population and therefore went from having two full classes every semester to one small class every other semester or sometimes every other year,” Denault claims.

Another difference is that the class doesn’t cover lunch runs this year. It’s only available Thursdays and Fridays during periods 7 and 8 now. Denault states that the class has been able to operate through Covid-19.

“I don’t know that Covid-19 has impacted us much other than not having as many tables/choosing to-go only, and having to wear masks,” she said. “The foodservice industry has been in the business of cleaning and sanitizing long before Covid-19!”

Food Review

Hazel Nut Lattes. A bit watery. Left a good after-taste. 7/10.

Italian Sausage and Kale Soup. The soup is very creamy. Kale is good and lightly crunchy, adding a good texture. Sausage is well cooked. The potato bits added extra flavor and substance. I ate in one sitting. 11/10.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake. The cake smelled sweet. Good balance of texture. Not too crunchy or moist. Strawberries were fresh and sweet. Milk chocolate and white chocolate added extra flavor. 9/10.

Service

Service-wise, I felt welcomed to be there. The staff were super nice and anticipated my needs. This is a must-go-to restaurant.
