This year, the Fargo South theater department did a one-act play called Check Please directed by Jordan Wagner (full disclosure: he’s a sibling of mine). The play is about a series of first dates gone wrong. In the play, Guy and Girl sit several tables away from each other at a restaurant and date one lunatic after another until they finally bump into each other at the end of the play.

Jordan had a lot of fun getting to work with new faces. He said that the script is funny and is something he always found easy to work with. “Directing a show and seeing everyone bring out the comedic gold that’s buried inside the script makes me ecstatic to be a part of,” Jordan said.

Jordan said that COVID-19 has been somewhat difficult to deal with.

“As an audience, we need to see the expressions and hear what’s being said.  That being said, it’s also been helpful in that it’s making actors go bigger with their voices and movements,” he said.

My favorite scene in the one-act play is when a guy meets a girl, Celeste, who is obsessed with her ex, Frank. The scene was funny because she would talk about him and say stuff that sounds the same as Frank, for example, “frank you.” At the end of the scene, the waiter, her ex, Frank, came in and noticed she was stalking him. That scene was also funny because the waiter told the guy “to run” while holding a plastic knife pointed at her.

My other favorite scene is when a guy meets a girl, Julia, who laughed over and over when he said “No, seriously, my dog got ran over.” That was my favorite scene because it was stupid humor and it was even funnier when her laugh was so overdramatic.

Although it was fun to watch the one-act play, there were some scenes that were dull to watch. For example, there was one scene when the girl meets a guy, Manny, who has many phobias. Throughout the scene, it was getting boring to watch the guy talking about his phobias.

The one-act play was, all in all, funny and showed the audience the comedic talents of the South High theater department.
