'Clickbait': A Wild Ride of Twists and Turns

Ben Pinks

Clickbait is an American-Australian drama mini-series that became available on Netflix in August. If you are a fan of shows with many unpredictable twists and turns, this is the show for you.

Plot

After Nick Brewer (Adrain Grenier) is abducted and scandalous information is revealed about him, his family must discover the truth behind his disappearance and bring the culprit to justice.

Throughout every episode, the story unveils into a darker story that weaves the online world into the real one. It also warns the viewer of the dangers of catfishing, cyberbullying and how spreading misinformation online can do more harm than one may expect.

Clickbait‘s cast consists of Adrian Grenier, Betty Gabriel, Zoe Kazan, and many more.

Review

Clickbait is a solid modern mystery with a semi-believable story that makes you want to keep watching.

While its technological elements may make it seem more modern to some, it does cause it to feel dated. Even in a time where everything is online, a story that leans so heavily on the current state of the internet is doomed to seem out of touch in less than five years.

Each episode focuses on a different character, but it doesn’t feel like a tangled story. It is a fun framing device to get to know the characters and how they deal with the disappearance of Nick Brewer, while moving the plot along with it.

Where Clickbait succeeds in its ability to leave the viewer wanting more, it fails in telling a truly believable story. Everything in the show feels like a heightened version of real life, and everything is just a bit too easy for the protagonists. They are just allowed to do whatever they want because they are the main characters, and any hardship is resolved fairly quickly.

Without spoiling anything, this is one the most unexpected endings I have ever seen. It comes out of nowhere and is what really makes the series what it is. It’s suspenseful, heartbreaking, and very satisfying. Most of the series was good up until the end, but the last episode really solidified this show as a one to remember.

Recommendation

Even though Clickbait isn’t the most realistic show, it is one I would recommend. It keeps the viewer entertained throughout and in the end that’s what we need. 7/10.‘Clickbait’ is available to watch now on Netflix.
