‘Voidtrain’: An Adventure Through the Unknown
September 17, 2021
Recently a new early access indie game has caught the attention of many.
“Voidtrain,” by Nearga, is advertised as a resource collection game, much like a similar popular game, Raft, however with a unique spin.
In “The Void” a mystical empty space, there is evidence of some people who seem to have inhabited it, the Nords and Celts, but also more recently the leftovers of the 3rd Reich which is a recent memory in the setting of the game.
The protagonist is an engineer who was sent to Germany to help rebuild but, ended up cornered by some comically thuggish Nazis in a shed where the portal to this strange void was being worked on, and as a sane person would you hop right in.
From a simple pump car to a functioning train of your design, players of “Voidtrain” explore this unknown world as a mysterious spectral track guides you from outpost to outpost, possibly full of Third Reich soldiers in which you must build an arsenal to defend yourself from.
The game begs the question of how did these people get here and why were they here. This mystery in conjunction with the graphics describing the vast expanse, the beautiful gradient colors that amazingly show the true depth of the incredible nothingness that is the void inspires a sense of grandiose and suspense.
Even with the looming void above, below, and just about everywhere else, the game also provides you with a sense of freedom, you alone on your train, or you and your friends can customize anything from the look of the train to the look of your character, to the weapons you fight with.
Though the game is remarkable in many ways, it does have its flaws. The research system used requires that each time you make something players essentially need double the resources to take into account research costs which is frustrating and is widely criticized.
Also, the simple concept that “Voidtrain” runs on, collecting floating resources to build your vessel, can get repetitive at times.
To give my opinion however I would say the game overall is a fun game worth its cost $30. I have enjoyed pumping my free hours into “Voidtrain” and await the updates that come and its full release.
For now, you can find it exclusively on the Epic Games store, on your PC.
