Tricks and Tips to Manage Stress During the Holidays

Jayda Hanson

As the holiday season rolls around the corner, there’s no doubt that there is a slough of people who have many expectations on their shoulders regarding Christmas. These would most likely include purchasing gifts for loved ones, arranging visits or even communicating with obnoxious in-laws.

With all of these issues creeping up on us as fast as ever, how can we find a way to calm ourselves down? Well, worry no more! Here are some ideas to help all of us find a little bit of peace during the holidays.

As much as we all love to give our loved ones as much time as we can, we also need to find time for ourselves. One way to mediate stress during these times is to occasionally avoid group activities where the atmosphere could potentially trigger stress from the social interaction. Focusing on yourself and your health is the most important thing after all.

Something else to consider is talking it out with a trusted friend or family member. Holiday stress is a common thing, so it’s never a bad idea to mention it to someone you know you can sort it out with. Maybe check in with them too just to make sure they’re doing okay during these times as well.

And finally, the last piece of advice I have to offer is in my opinion extremely important, and that is saying “no.”

The holidays give people the excuse to sort of boss you around or ask for very difficult favors. During this time everyone is expected to play their part and spend more than they’re comfortable with on some occasions. If someone has asked you to do something or purchase something that is way more than you’re willing to contribute, don’t be afraid to say no. Nobody is obligated to tell you how to spend your money or how you should spend your time.

As stressful as the holiday season is, always remember that this will not last forever. These stresses will eventually fade out and we will return to our normal routine without all of these annoying things happening to us. Make sure to take care of yourself, and happy holidays!
