Generational Trauma Takes Spotlight in Excellent ‘Encanto’

Encanto is the newest animated film Disney has released.

The movie revolves around a Columbian family known as the Madrigals. The Madrigals where gifted a magical candle at Abuela’s time of need. Since then the candle has given each person born in the madrigal family a gift at the age of five. The main character Mirabel is the one exception. The main plot of the story is Mirabel wanting to help the family and wanting to save the candle that she assumes to be dying.

One of the more hidden themes shown in Encanto is generational trauma. Generational trauma is passing oppressive or traumatic effects of a historical event through generations. Abuela lost her home and the love of her life due to invaders, causing her to grow cold and push down how she really feels inside. Abuela wanting to protect the candle she was given and the families gift’s which causes her to force her family to be who she wants them to be. Due to Abuela wanting to protect the family is comes off in a more controlling way which effects Mirabel especially. Since Mirabel doesn’t have a gift she is looked down upon by Abuela and generally pushed to the side because she’s “not good enough”.

Overall Encanto is such a beautiful movie with amazing design details. Every single detail in Encanto is so well thought out and produced. The movie is so moving and it’s cast of family members are all so easy to relate with. The music in Encanto is so feeling packed and catchy and really expresses how the characters feel. Encanto hands down has to be one of my favorite animated movies which is why i give it a 9/10. Every part of the movie is so amazing to experience and I 100% recommend this movie because of how incredible to plot and story design is.
