South Teacher Dies After Battle with Cancer

Cindy Evenson, 65, passed away Friday at her home. She was a FACS and CTRE teacher at Fargo South and elsewhere throughout her career in education.

“We are saddened to share the loss of one of our Bruin family members,” wrote Dr. Bertsch in a message shared by staff to students on Monday. “Cindy’s dedication and her support to Bruin students and staff has been an example of determination and perseverance.”

Despite the cancer diagnosis in the fall, Evenson continued her work through the school year.

She will be remembered as a kind person and who was nothing but gentle with the students. Many students cherished her and enjoyed her company throughout the years. She assisted many of the teachers and used her time to help students as much as she could. Personally, I do not believe there was a day that went by without her smiling. She left an impact on many of us and will continue to live on in our memories.

A private funeral is scheduled for Friday afternoon, and all friends and family are welcome to join her celebration of life, which is scheduled for 5-7 p.m. at the Clair City, S.D., community center.

Students and staff are encouraged to reach out to others during this time of loss, Dr. Bertsch said in the Friday message.

“We all grieve in different ways–there is no right or wrong way to express grief. Some of us may feel sad, or confused, or nothing at all. Sometimes we are reminded of other deaths and may react to those deaths and not necessarily Cindy’s. That’s okay. Some of us may be just fine and that’s okay, too. But being sensitive and respectful of everyone’s feelings is particularly important right now. Treat yourselves and others well during this difficult time.”
