‘Barbarian’: The Horror film of the year

Ramla Ali

“Barbarian” is the hit of 2022 horror along with “Smile.” The film was given minimal advertising but managed to receive popularity with many horror fans. It received high ratings from critics and had plot twists that I could never predict coming, and an ending that left me surprised. This film is rated R for 17 years old and above, because of the movie’s violence and gore. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is looking for a good horror or mystery film. The director and writer of the film is Zach Cregger. The director did an amazing job building suspense throughout this film. The movie stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgård, and Justin Long.

The main character, Tess Marshall, played by Georgina Campbell, books an Airbnb in a rundown neighborhood while staying in Detroit for a job interview. She is surprised to see the home is already rented by a man named Keith, played by Bill Skarsgård. Since there is a storm raging outside with no other hotels available, Tess finds herself with no option but to spend the night at the Airbnb. She soon discovers that the house she has rented is not what it seems.

Zach Cregger did an amazing job directing this movie. In the first couple of scenes, Zach builds suspense through the two characters’ interactions. You truly are unaware of who the threat is in the beginning of the film. AJ, played by Justin Long, does a wonderful job at mixing comedy with a horror film. Barbarian was the most unpredictable horror movie I’ve seen. The trailer did a miraculous job of not revealing too much information about the film. That will leave the audience wanting to learn more.

The film would jump from a tense horror scene then to comedy, leaving the audience with a range of emotions. The soundtrack of the film also helped bring tension throughout the movie. I would give Barbarian 8/10 stars and recommend it to anyone looking for an entertaining horror film. The cast was perfectly picked for this film, and the performances were great.  Barbarian, in my opinion, was one of the best horror films of the year.
