Face Off: Social Media Apps Should NOT Have Time Limits

Sixty-five percent of students and faculty at South, believe apps should not have a screen time limit for individuals under the age of eighteen. Most of the time when individuals have screen time, they will find a way to either get more screen time or change the biggest restriction on the app, their age. A staff member here at South voted no and stated that people would lie about their age to gain more screen time.

It is also a popular belief that people thirteen and under should have restrictions on certain apps and even screen time. Most apps already have restrictions on people under the age of thirteen who cannot have the app but most lie about their age anyways so they can talk to their friends and be active on social media. A student said that if the individual was the age of thirteen then the screen time should be applied but for every individual under the age of eighteen is excessive.

I believe that it should be left up to the parent/guardian of the individual and not the decision of the app. Another student here at South said that it is the parent/guardian’s job to be monitoring apps and other areas of the child’s life to ensure the child is a well-rounded, balanced person.

I also believe giving the restriction for everyone under the age of eighteen is extremely excessive because if the individual is seventeen why should they only be allowed thirty minutes on an app? Another student at South said no because apps having age limits are easily passed and cheated by someone who wants to change their age in the app. It is honestly stupid to put those restrictions on an app when the restrictions are of age, which is very easily changeable. Another student voted no because it’s just stupid.
