One of the first movies to redefine horror and my personal favorite movie during Halloween time is an oldie but a goodie, which is Wes Craven’s classic 1996 slasher film, “Scream.” Scream was a breath of fresh air to the horror genre in the late 90’s and is still one of the most beloved classics during this time of year. The movie follows a masked killer hunting down teenagers before meeting his match with a group that refuses to give up and die.
Drew Barrymore’s iconic opening scene sets a suspenseful tone for the movie and manages to not reveal any twists and turns that the movie later has in store. Wes Craven does an amazing job in keeping the mystery aura from start to finish, elevating the suspense scene by scene. Beautiful characterization, well-written screenplay and a touch of humor are key components as to why this movie is such a treat for the audience. Not only that, but the film being made in the 90’s brings nostalgia to horror fanatics and takes the audience back to the aesthetics of the time. This movie has underestimated importance to horror cinema and is a total must-watch this Halloween season.
