SAVED!, a folk-horror record released by Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter on October 20, 2023, combines the artist’s own take on gospel classics such as “How Can I Keep From Singing” with her original music. Kristin Hayter, formerly known professionally as Lingua Ignota, is an avant-garde, experimental musician. Moving away from music about her relationship trauma, this record revolves around her personal relationship with Catholicism from being in a church choir at age 8 to the Christian dark wave records that she has released since.
The opening track, I’M GETTING OUT WHILE I CAN, begins by cocooning the listener in sound, then slowly descending into chaos. The second song on the album, ALL MY FRIENDS ARE GOING TO HELL, juxtaposes the first track with a much more bleak and desolate feel. Hayter takes inspiration from religious hymns for the overall sound of the album, but still incorporates her signature sound of harsh noise and classical singing. In an interview with Kerrang! Magazine, Hayter stated that her intention with her new project is to “challenge people”. The final track on the album, HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING, starts out slow and reminiscent of a church hymn, but gradually builds up a feeling of unease with Hayter whispering, then crying out in tongues, producing a sinister sound that stays with the listener.
