On Tuesday, November 28th, South High Bruins received a Spiritacular T-shirt upon arrival at school before attending an all-school assembly to hear from Mr. Gaelin Elmore. Elmore, standing at 6’5″, was drafted for the NFL before leaving it to pursue self-love as well as to join the ministry. Since then, he has been a public speaker. He came to South High on Tuesday to discuss belonging and overcoming adversity in his own life, having been in and out of foster homes since the age of 4. After the assembly, students participated in a follow-up activity.
The goal of Spiritacular is to highlight student activities as well as encourage Bruin values. Upperclassmen of South High may recall participating in Spiritacular two years prior to this one – this is because South High hosts this event every other year. Spiritacular, an event that is unique to South High, started in the long-ago year of 1989. Dr. Richard Warner, principal of South High for 25 years, began the tradition to coincide with Spirit Week.
“As principal since 2004, I am honored to continue the tradition of Spiritacular,” said South High principal Dr. Todd Bertsch in an interview with the Sudhian. “I am very proud to continue Spiritacular for the awesome student body and outstanding staff, as we celebrate being Bruins and doing things the Bruin way.” So, Spiritacular is a core tradition for Fargo South and will remain that way for the years to come.
