As we approach the holiday season, many of us reflect on what we are grateful for but fail to think about the less fortunate. Food insecurity is a big problem, in not only our schools but also in our communities. One in every nine students face the issue of not having enough food at home and having to starve. As the number of people who face hunger keeps rising, many people wonder how they can give back. One food drive that is particularly extraordinary is called Fill the Dome. This is a student-led project and a collaboration between schools along with student councils all across the district. Students from K-12 participate by bringing in food items and laying them out on the floor of the Fargodome with the goal of filling the dome floor.
There are two days in this event. The first day consists of students making a design using their school’s food items. On the second day, students take down the design, pack the food items up, and the food is then brought to the Great Plains Food Bank. This year, South High’s student council attended this event and participated in making a design.
This year, the event is even more special as the most amount of money and food was raised since the start of this program. With over $35,000 and 100,000lbs in food donated, students broke the record for money and food raised during the drive this year.
Fill the Dome is a powerful reminder that, when communities come together, anything is possible. It’s a demonstration of how even the smallest contributions can make a big difference for those in need.
