Student Council, run by Mrs. Heggen and Ms. Houglum, is an extracurricular activity at South High School available to all students that helps to plan events and carry out projects to serve the school. Every year, student councils from schools all over the state come together to the 3-day North Dakota Association of Student Councils (NDASC) conference in Bismarck. Hundreds of students convene to write speeches, work on service projects, and get to know people. Mylee Ward, who attended the conference for the third time, shared some words about Student Council in an interview with the Sudhian.
“We at Student Council work on bettering issues,” said Ward, “like the problem of vaping in our bathrooms.” The conference, which is not new to long-time councilmember Ward, “is a good chance to meet new people.” Attendees may run for state council board positions at the conference. There are 5 members that are elected during the conference. Councilmembers may vie for the positions of president, vice president, class A rep, or be one of two class B reps. “There is a lot of campaigning and listening to speeches,” said Ward, because voting delegates from each school will vote on the positions which are announced on the third day.
One campaign that stood out came from South High School. Mylee Ward, who ran for Class A representative, ran on the campaign slogan, ‘Stay Smiley with Mylee’. To help send this positive message, Ward wanted to bring the community of South together with friendship bracelets being made in schools. Ward executed this at South High by having a bracelet station available in the library. “I campaigned by making a visual board, a video, and handing out bracelets at the conference,” said Ward. The bracelet was popular among students at South High. It was also popular at the NDASC conference, as on the third day, the attendees voted in Mylee Ward as the 2023-2024 Class A Representative. She will serve on this board until the next conference.
