The social factor of the internet is becoming a very controversial topic for middle school and high school, as some say the internet is a beneficial tool for interaction while others argue that it’s bad for mental health. In the December Sudhian poll asking about whether their access to internet was harmful in middle school or high school, 61.9% of Bruins responded “no.” The reasons varied. One teacher wrote “No, I grew up in the 80’s, but I think it has been harmful for students today.” One student wrote about utilizing media consumption skills by navigating the internet critically. “I definitely got into some areas of the web that were not good,” wrote one student, “but all in all, I think that I maintained a balance by thinking critically about what I encountered.” There is no one either answer for everybody as each student has had a different encounter with the internet, but the web can be a very helpful vice for finding information, socializing, and killing boredom when used appropriately.
