Art Club is an after-school activity and South High cultural staple that meets every other Wednesday during the school year. Led by visual art specialist Ms. Johnson, does many different fun art-based activities in a calming, social environment, which gives the club its high status among students. There are various activities in Art Club, include designing buttons, making sketchbooks, bookmarks, ornaments, jewelry, painting shoes, and more. Other projects relating to South High include school murals, counseling center inspirational art, Bruin Bash artwork, and selling items at school to raise money. This year is the biggest recorded Art Club yet with 45 students having signed up.
“Art Club is the best because of our students, of course,” said club coordinator Ms. Johnson. “Art Club is open to anyone who would like to come in and create a social atmosphere.” What’s so great about Art Club, she says, is that “it is so flexible and if there is a week you don’t want to do the project, you don’t have to come every time.” However, those who are committed may receive an Art Club Letter.
“My favorite activity,” said South High student Kalyssa Nelson, “has probably been when we painted bleach on black t-shirts last year.” Nelson, having been in Art Club since her sophomore year, is definitely not new to the unique and fun projects of Art Club as there is always something interesting to do. When asked if Art Club had to choose between Vincent van Gopher and Leonardo da Finchi as a class pet, Nelson said, “Oh, Vincent van Gopher for sure.” Art Club coordinator Ms. Johnson had to concur. For any students looking for a fun club to do with friends, Art Club is the place to be.
