The 66th Annual Grammy Awards were held on Sunday, February 4, and many viewers have had some reservations about whether the most recent award-winners were deserving of their wins. Some of the biggest active musicians in the industry, such as Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, and Taylor Swift, had some of their greatest successes this previous year. In the past year, many new artists have skyrocketed to fame and blown up like never before. At the same time, many consistent, long-time artists have shown that they have retained their popularity. After the award ceremony, the Recording Academy has received some criticism for their recent award winners, and if they are the ones who should have won in their respective categories.
For one, many people disagree with the decision to make the Miley Cyrus song “Flowers” as winner for Record Of The Year. Many viewers wrote that that “Flowers” won because the commercial success of the song is being valued more than the critical acclaim a song has received. However, this controversy doesn’t apply to just one award. Controversy arose when the Album of the Year award went to Taylor Swift for her 2022 album “Midnights.” People are disagreeing with her fourth win in this category, saying that it should have gone to an artist who has not yet received recognition in this category — six of which were nominated this year, including Lana Del Rey, Olivia Rodrigo, SZA, boygenius, Janelle Monae, and Miley Cyrus. This isn’t the first time the Recording Academy has been called out for snubbing artists who were deemed more deserving of a nomination. Hopefully, the Recording Academy reflects on their criteria for choosing nominees and winners, and begins to choose their winners more fairly.
