The South High Student Council launched the student-driven program S.A.V.E. or Students Against Vaping & Vandalism Everywhere to assist kids who are addicted to vaping and to limit the acts of vandalism. The Idea originated when some bathrooms around the school were occasionally locked to prevent people from vaping there. Many people became upset about the bathrooms being locked for extended periods and having people who vape in areas where most people would use them. Athletes or those with respiratory conditions will also be quickly affected if they enter the restroom and breathe in the fumes.
Additionally, most restrooms are prone to vandalism, such as people putting orange juice bottles in the toilets. This causes issues for our diligent custodians and also for the kids who use the toilets. The overall goals of the Bruins are to help people and run a satisfactory school for all students. “Rather than making people feel guilty about vaping, we want to educate them about the risks involved,” states Mrs. Heggen. The concept of this will soon be taken action next year with McKenna Bakko who is the chair of the committee. The committee intends to collaborate with Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) shortly.
