Umoja, an in-school writing group at South High, had an exciting project where they dove into the most pressing issues facing our community today. Throughout the month of March, they explored topics such as division, healing, social justice, family dynamics, and global concerns. They aimed not to only just understand these issues at a surface level but also to dig deeper into their root causes. Students’ ideas ranged from teen pregnancy to first-generation immigrants. On March 26th, Umoja groups presented their research and discuss their finding on these pressing issues. Following the presentation, the winner of the project will be announced in April during Umoja’s graduation ceremony. The winner will receive a prize of $200 in recognition of their outstanding contribution to the project and their commitment to addressing the community’s most pressing issues. Umoja’s passion project is an important part activity the non-profit dedication to unity, understanding, and positive change. By engaging with these critical topics and encouraging community participation, Umoja strives to create a more inclusive, compassionate, and empowered community.
