‘Demure,’ a term for someone elegant, humble, and ‘cutesy,’ is the trending word I find more annoying than ‘Brat’. ‘Demure’ isn’t even derived from something iconic to pop culture like a top-charting album, it was the schtick of online creators. These creators were funny when it had remained their own, but there was no reason for the word to take such a root in society this last month. ‘Demure’ sparks a monster inside of me. Additionally, 52% of students surveyed at South thought ‘demure’ was more annoying than ‘brat’.
Regarding both ‘Brat’ and ‘demure’, it was funny at first, but like all trends with no meaning, we need to wrap this up. It feels like half the people who use this word don’t even know what it means and just use it to describe anything feminine, which is another conversation in itself. As this word continues to grow in popularity, you could make the argument that “we” make judgement on anything that becomes popular. Yes ‘we’ do, and will continue to.
I feel like ‘demure’ is a term for fluorescence-blinded LinkedIn addicts and space aliens trying to fit in with the remnants of humanity. In its current style of usage it just feels superficial and adds nothing.
Like all word usages, there are exceptions to what I’m saying, so don’t feel insecure if you’re a ‘demure’ user. Stay mindful and cutesy.
