During registration for the 2024-2025 school year, students from grades 10-12 were told that their previous lockers would no longer be assigned. Instead, students could opt in to receive a new locker at their convenience. One reason for this is that it is easier on South High staff as, since they won’t need to assign a locker to each student, the workload on the administration for the new school year is easier. Also, there is a decreasing need for lockers at school. Students are allowed to bring backpacks into class with them, nullifying one of the main reasons for having a locker.

However, during winter, many students put their coat and other winter clothes in their locker before class starts. This may lead some non-locker students to either not wear a coat or bring their winter clothes to class, which many teachers see as an unnecessary distraction in the classroom. The new locker method may lead to future conflict, especially in the winter months, but also there is truly is no need for one outside those months as backpacks can be carried from class to class. This topic should at least be discussed and be engaged in some amount of debate over the issue to help find a true middle ground between the posed problems and solutions of the new way our school is managing lockers this year.
