Do you have certain resources that make you feel better when you’re panicked or sad? For some people, this may be talking to a loved one, breathing techniques, or even listening to music. However, a huge relaxation strategy could be the companionship of an animal.
Millie, a certified emotional service animal that used to be available at Fargo South, provided this comfort for many students and teachers alike until the District Office made the confusing decision to remove her from South’s Wellness Wednesday program each week. In a comment from Mrs. Smithmeyer on the petition for Millie’s return, she states, “[Millie] brings so much comfort and joy to our entire community at South High. The outpour of love for her and the sadness our staff and students expressed when she was no longer allowed has been overwhelming.”
Though we seemingly had all the permission needed to allow Millie at our school, the decision was still made to ban her despite wide belief around the school that she should stay. This is represented by the vigorous work done by both students and staff to convince the District Office that Millie belongs at our school. There is a petition out right now that advocates for the return of South’s beloved Millie that is student-run, not to mention the extensive work done by Millie’s owner Beth as well as Mrs. Smithmeyer. Millie’s owner has gone through the complete process of ensuring a service dog license for Millie that is supported by the American Kennel Club, a legitimate organization. Mrs. Smithmeyer has also written an entire report explaining Millie’s extreme importance at this school to present in hopes of her return. It is obvious Millie belongs at our school — bring her back!
