If there’s one artist who knows how to connect people to their emotions, it’s SZA. On December 20th, SZA dropped her third studio deluxe album, “LANA.” This album feels like a punch in the gut and a friend’s warm hug at the same time. With her mix of R&B, jazz, and soft pop, SZA proves her skills as a musician once again. The singer has a very unique voice, but her songwriting skills and personality also shine through in this newest album. What makes the 15 new tracks so special is how relatable and personal this album feels.
Although SZA may have written these songs about her own personal life, making it feel like a diary, the emotions of the lyrics can be applied to any situation. My favorite song is “Another Life,” as she talks about a relationship that didn’t work out without no bad blood. In this song, she is finding peace in knowing that she and this person will work out in another life. It dives into the experience of yearning and wanting, but also the bittersweetness of accepting reality. Not only can this song be applied to romantic relationships, but also to friendships that fell out or ended badly, or even to situations within a listener’s family. Some other really great songs on the album that explore similar themes are “Kitchen” and “Scorsese Baby Daddy.” Overall, this is the kind of album you’d want to listen to when you’re in your feelings, but also if you need a reminder that someone else has gone through what you have and what you are feeling.
