While New Year’s resolutions can seem like a great way to kickstart self improvement, not everyone can agree that they work. Most of the time, they often fail to deliver lasting results for a great deal of reasons. In this month’s poll, 72% of students at Fargo South voted that resolutions generally don’t work. Some stated that their vote is because they believe that people bite off more than they can chew, setting “unrealistic standards and take major behavioral changes.” Many people often approach resolutions with the idea of being perfect and going in with an “all or nothing” mindset. In their heads, if they miss a day or something such as working out, or reading, that they have completely failed and give up altogether. Another issue is the lack or motivation and genuine interest setting and completing their goals. Resolutions often stem from the pressure of social media and society, other than personal interest. This hinders the fun and positivity in it, which obviously makes it hard for someone to stick to these goals long-term. This negative and fixed mindset surrounding New Year’s resolutions is most likely why they don’t stick, because it turns the resolutions into a chore, rather than a fun objective to work towards to.
