Captain America: Brave New World is a newly-released movie from February 14th. This film does a fantastic job of highlighting the protagonist’s journey, not just as a hero, but also as a leader and mentor with his new role.
In the film, there are some really well-produced action and fight sequences. However, I wish we got to see more camera work and exciting angles. I loved how natural it felt for Sam to become Captain America and hold the iconic shield, especially because they didn’t erase his fears or history as a black man. The message this sends is very powerful: it doesn’t matter what Captain America looks like, because it’s about his drive to help and fight for the people of the world.
The whole movie contains people doubting or diminishing Sam’s credibility to be Captain America because he is black, but also because he doesn’t have any power or super serum. But time and time again, it’s shown that Sam is absolutely fit to be Captain America, because he is dedicated and puts himself in the eye of danger. Most times, he’s without gear, and literally just has to fight. Unfortunately, while Sam’s character shines, the film’s villain falls a bit flat, lacking the impact needed to truly elevate the stakes.
Overall, Captain America: Brave New World is a solid 3.75 stars. And while it had room for more depth in the plot and villain area, it still successfully depicted Sam Wilson’s character and established his identity as Captain America.
