South’s Production of “Almost Maine” an Online Success

The Fargo South 2020 production, “Almost Maine,” directed by Kevin Kennedy, completed its run in early November to a virtual-only audience.

The show is about a series of nine short scenes that all take place at the same time on a winter night in the fictional town of Almost, Maine. Mr. Kennedy picked this play because he thought it was a perfect production for social distancing because all of the scenes required only two actors.

“This way we could separate the actors during rehearsal and minimize exposure to COVID,” he said.

The set on “Almost Maine” was beautiful and the actors did a wonderful job in the show. I loved how I saw the connection between the two actors in certain scenes.

The connection that I saw between the two actors was an emotional connection because there were moments that the two couple angry with each other or sometimes happy with each other.  I loved that there a lot of “aha” moments in the show but there was also a lot of confusion, like, “what happened?” or, “who’s this?”

There were some cheesy moments, too. There was one scene in which the two friends are in love with each other and during the conversation they are tripping and falling.

The difficult process in the play was that they decided to cast six understudies so that they were covered in case someone caught COVID.

Mr. Kennedy said, “We did have four people that were contact traced out of rehearsal, including one person that got contact-traced out during the performances.”

He also said they were forced to live stream the show less than a week before opening.

“That changed everything,” Kennedy said. He said that they had to redo the blocking, lights, and sound for the show.

“It was crazy for a few days, but the show turned out great.” If that happens again, he said that they are prepared to do this again in the spring.

Mr. Kennedy said that he liked this show, but he felt like he would never get to do it because the cast is so small, but he was happy that he got to chance to do it.
