Face-Off: Should North Dakota Legalize Marijuana?

Lexi Lauwers and Kayden Nielsen

Yes:
More than half of US adults have tried marijuana, whether it was illegal or not. Marijuana has been proven to reduce stress and keep people calm.

Legalizing marijuana would boost the economy. The marijuana industry generated about 7.2 billion dollars in economic activity. They also added millions of dollars in federal taxes paid by cannabis businesses.

Marijuana can be dangerous for people to buy it off the streets. They have no idea what they are consuming, whether it’s mold, fungus, pesticides, or other harmful toxins. If marijuana is legalized the government can set up testing sites to produce marijuana with no harmful chemicals in it.

Also, on the topic of safety, according to marijuana.procon.org, in states that have already legalized marijuana car accident rates have decreased. Marijuana is a lot less harmful than tobacco and alcohol which is already legal.

Crimes will decrease when marijuana is legalized because people who use and sell it won’t be doing it illegally. Basically saying, if marijuana is legalized people won’t have to worry about random people selling them god knows what, instead they can go into a store and buy marijuana that’s been tested and proven to be safe and have no harmful toxins.

Legalizing marijuana would also give thousands of people jobs.

The government also doesn’t have a right to say what adults can put into their bodies, therefore the government has no right to keep marijuana illegal.

No:
Marijuana should not be legalized in North Dakota. Many others in the state of North Dakota do not believe that it is right to legalize the use of marijuana.

When people start using marijuana for medical reasons or relaxation, they do not think that they will get addicted to the drug but, in some cases, they do end up getting addicted and can’t get pleasure without using marijuana.

Young people especially can get addicted much faster than adults. Teens’ brains are still developing, and using marijuana, is slowing down their brain function and overall health as well.

When a young person gets addicted to something it is very hard for them to receive help unless they get help right away.

About 28 percent of deaths in the United States have been caused by teens driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. By legalizing marijuana, that number may go up if people can get a hold of and use the drug.

With that, no, the state of North Dakota should not legalize the use of marijuana.
